They offer the best roasted coffee, handcrafted beverages; coffee experience products, excellence service and innovation, plus they are dedicated to produce a great coffee experience to customers. (Starbucks, 2011) The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze Starbucks’ organizational structure and the best form of organizational structure that best fits Starbucks with an emphasis on Job description and Job Specification for a Starbucks employee. I will also try to determine the form of departmentalization that should be used, as well as whether centralization or decentralization of power should be used in light of the recent financial struggles they’ve had. Lastly, I will attempt to determine which organizational configuration best fits Starbucks. Job description is defined as â€Å"a formal lists of tasks and duties† and Job specification is defined as â€Å"a list of eligibility requirements or qualifications needed to perform a job† (Reilly, Minnick Baack. 2011). These definitions will be used in creating a position for a new employee. Job Description: If you love coffee and helping people than you just might be perfect for this job! At Starbucks, we strive to provide a much needed service in today’s busy world. At Starbucks you can learn all about different coffee beans from all over the world and help in developing a great working team. You will be trained in what it means to thoroughly enjoy your job, the people you work with in a clean and safe environment and to enjoy working with the best coffee you can imagine. Job Specification: Develop a working knowledge of all products we offer. Maintain a clean and friendly store. Maintain a professional attitude and your composure should the store become busier than usual. Anticipates customer and store needs. Be Flexible with shifts and days that you can work. Starbucks should be using is departmentalization by geographic region. Starbuck locations are all over the United States. Starbucks uses a matrix configuration by combining divisional and functional structures. Divisional structure is used in multi-product or multi-market operations. Starbucks fall into this structure by having so many different beverages and items on the menu. When putting out so many different items one has to specialize in those items. Starbucks trains their employees to know every item inside and out. You cannot have one person who can make one drink and nit another. They use functional structure to stay organized activities such as coordination, supervision and task allocation. With 18,000 stores it takes many teams to stay updated of everything that is going on in the market. Starbucks hires people who specialize in marketing strategy to keep them on top of the market. The form should be changed in the stores that serve lunch because the structure of the work changes. It becomes more of a machine bureaucracy in that it is highly routine in making drinks as well as sandwiches and salads. When you have to repeat something many times you are working like a machine. Starbucks has decentralized authority because they created decision-making for each manager. There are also lots of stores around the world and each store has different from the authority, managers, and customers. This also allows for employees to be able to give their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. If the company uses their ideas they are rewarded. It also allows for the lines of communication to stay open between employees and managers which allows for a friendly working environment. Starbucks is making sure that it is here to stay. By surrounding itself and its team members with the best training and communication they stand out against all competitors. Yes, other will try to stand up against the designer coffee label but when it comes down to it Starbucks is finding new ways to stay at the top. With being in different regions they have created an evening atmosphere where you can drop in after work, with friends, after yoga, by yourself, after a long day or after a great day. Starbucks will change the structure of the business as many times as it takes to make it work for them. August Wilson’s Fences August Wilson''s 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Fences" thoughtfully examines the escalating racial tensions in America during the 1950s. The playwright deftly handles such complex social issues as racism and adultery without smug commentary. The subtle discussion of black America offers more insight than lecture, which heightens the dramatic impact upon the audience. Wilson recognizes that the family lies the foundation for American society as a whole, and shrewdly chooses family as the emphasis for "Fences." The play''s central focus is the Maxson''s, the instrument Wilson uses to introduce African-American culture to those who are unfamiliar. In the mid-1950s, America was still experiencing a post-World War II economic boon, and could at last allow foreign affairs to take a back seat to domestic issues. The social climate was becoming increasingly heated with the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, which ruled school segregation was unconstitutional. This landmark ruling ignited racial tensions across America, which had been slowly simmering for years. The protagonist of "Fences" is former baseball player-turned Pittsburgh garbage man Troy Maxson, and the antagonist is clearly racism. It is racism which has defied Troy Maxson at every turn and his skin color stood in the way of his quest to grab a piece of the American dream for himself and his family. Racism creates the conflict, which causes Troy to feel that he has been "fenced" in by a discriminatory society. It has heated tensions within the Maxson home between Troy and his wife, Rose, and Troy and his son Cory. August Wilson establishes an impression of the 53-year-old Troy Maxson early in Act I, writing that he is "a large man with thick, heavy hands; it is this largeness that he strives to fill out and make an accommodation with.

Without control the organization cannot flourish its possibilities and success. There are times situations will get out of control in different departments of the organization. With the help of control mechanisms like market control, feedback control, concurrent control, and feedforward control with the right person in management the situations will be handled. EffectivenessApple’s organization basically uses a bureaucratic control and market control mechanism, which is controlled in all the operations in Apple’s organization by the CEO, in which used to be Steve jobs but Tim Cook is his predecessor as CEO. There are four types of specific control mechanisms in Apple, such as a feed-forward, concurrent, market, and feedback controls. The feed-forward control mechanism i n apple’s organization is very effective, this organization is a system of innovation and differentiation in which a feed-forward control mechanism would benefit this organization tremendously.This is because Apple’s system is on meeting the customers’ needs and wants and prediction of their future wants and needs and ability to determine functionality of the operations of their organization is crucial to this success. A feed-forward control mechanism lays out all rules and regulations in all of the organizations operations and employee based decisions and activities, Apple is an organization based on control and effectiveness if this control.Apples use of a concurrent control mechanism is one of their primary focuses because the focus is on environment awareness of the products in the process of the manufacturing, transportation, product use, recycling, and facilities. A concurrent control in the oversight of the use of greenhouse gas emissions in the process o f the production of their products in which they call a Comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (Apple, 2012). Apple needs to have eyes on the production cycle to monitor the arbon emitted in the production of their products, so a concurrent control mechanism is one of their primary focuses in their company and meeting the needs of their clients worldwide. Another main focus of Apple’s organization is their marketing strategies, a market control mechanism. A market control Mechanism has a focus on the price competition of the other major competitor corporations, in which is another of Apple’s focuses.Apple strives to be the best in all operations and in marketing they are constantly competing with other multi- million corporations. A feedback control mechanism has to do with the feedback the organization gets back on processes and operations in an organization. This is the driving force of Apple, to be the most innovative and to maintain a differentiation aspect they must re ly on the feedback they receive in all departments and operations in their organization.They rely on their financial, marketing, service, production, and environment awareness to be the reason that the client chooses Apple’s products over Apple’s competitors product’s, and Apple becomes the number one organization globally as the go to in products. All four of these mechanisms have a positive effect on the four functions of management. Feedforward control is a mechanism that handles the operations and procedures and makes sure the operation and procedures are done the correct way. By using this mechanism it stops a problem before it can arise.Feedforword is a very important mechanism to have when dealing with an operation like Apple. Technology is the main source of communication and running businesses along with many other things feedforward would work with any company. No one wants to have problems with the departments of their company, to avoid any problems f eedforward would be the right tool to use. Then there is the market control mechanism that uses a tool called pricing mechanism to control the activities within the organization like they are economic transactions.The market mechanism is an awesome tool to have because confused output can be identified and market can be set up between parties. Concurrent control is a mechanism that occurs when plans are being carried out such as directing, monitoring, and fine-tuning. One more control mechanism is the feedback control that happens when the performance data have been collected and examine and is given to make corrections through someone or something. All four of these control mechanisms are very ffective within an organization. I don’t believe that a negative affect will occur because the controlled mechanisms are needed to control the functions of the organization. Just like the four functions of management are needed to establish the success of a company the control mechanis ms are needed too. Apple is worldwide company that has the hart of many consumers, customers, and inverters without the four functions of management and control mechanisms Apple would not hart of its customers.Because Apple is so successful all of these control mechanisms are required along with the four functions of management. Steve Jobs was the CEO of Apple Inc. before he died he was a man that took his job seriously. If Steve Jobs did not care about how his company was ran it would not have the success it does today. Steve made sure that he set performance standards and took action when the performance was not the way he wanted it to be. This is all about controlling what goes on within the organization to be successful.

I was never interested in having a sibling, until I had one. I always thought I would be perfectly happy on my own, just me, myself, and I. The only person I ever had to be concerned about was myself. My parents were just about always busy, and I sometimes even had to spend my days at my mom’s work office. Dad was normally always doing something and worked late. I had a good group of friends, and they were all I needed, right? But once my family adopted a little boy, I was never alone.
