U.S. Southwests Colorado River (Geography and More)
U.S. Southwest's Colorado River (Geography and More) The Colorado River (map) is a very large river located in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. The states it runs through include Colorado, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Baja California and Sonora. It is approximately 1,450 miles (2,334 km) in length and it drains an area of about 246,000 square miles (637,000 sq km). The Colorado River is important historically and it is also a major source of water and electrical power for millions of people in the areas in which it drains. Source: La Poudre Pass Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, ColoradoSource Elevation: 10,175 feet (3,101 m)Mouth: Gulf of California, MexicoLength: 1,450 miles (2,334 km)River Basin Area: 246,000 square miles (637,000 sq km) Course of the Colorado River The headwaters of the Colorado River begin at La Poudre Pass Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. The elevation of this lake is approximately 9,000 feet (2,750 m). This is a significant point in the geography of the United States because it is where the Continental Divide meets the Colorado River drainage basin. As the Colorado River begins to descend in elevation and flow to the west, it flows into Grand Lake in Colorado. After descending further, the river then enters several reservoirs and finally flows out to where it parallels U.S. Highway 40, joins several of its tributaries and then parallels U.S. Interstate 70 for a short time. Once the Colorado River meets the U.S. southwest, it begins to meet several more dams and reservoirs- the first of which is the Glen Canyon Dam which forms Lake Powell in Arizona. From there, the Colorado River begins to flow through massive canyons which it helped carve millions of years ago. Among these is the 217 mile (349 km) long Grand Canyon. After flowing through the Grand Canyon, the Colorado River meets the Virgin River (one of its tributaries) in Nevada and flows into Lake Mead after being blocked by the Hoover Dam at the Nevada/Arizona border. After flowing through the Hoover Dam, the Colorado River continues its course toward the Pacific through several more dams, including the Davis, Parker and Palo Verde Dams. It then flows into the Coachella and Imperial Valleys in California and finally into its delta in Mexico. It should be noted, however, that the Colorado River delta, while once rich marshland, is today mainly dry aside from exceptionally wet years due to the removal of water upstream for irrigation and city uses. Human History of the Colorado River Humans have inhabited the Colorado River basin for thousands of years. Early nomadic hunters and Native Americans have left artifacts throughout the area. For example, the Anasazi began living in Chaco Canyon at around 200 B.C.E. Native American civilizations grew to their peak from 600 to 900 C.E. but they began to decline after that, likely due to drought. The Colorado River was first noted in historic documents in 1539 when Francisco de Ulloa sailed upstream from the Gulf of California. Shortly thereafter, several attempts were made by various explorers to sail farther upstream. Throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, a variety of maps showing the river were drawn but they all had different names and courses for it. The first map using the name Colorado appeared in 1743. Throughout the late 1800s and into the 1900s, several expeditions to explore and accurately map the Colorado River took place. In addition from 1836 to 1921, the Colorado River was called the Grand River from its source in Rocky Mountain National Park to its confluence with the Green River in Utah. In 1859 a U.S. Army topographic expedition led by John Macomb occurred, during which he precisely located the confluence of the Green and Grand Rivers and declared it the source of the Colorado River. In 1921, the Grand River was renamed the Colorado River and since then the river has included all of its present-day area. Dams of the Colorado River The modern history of the Colorado River consists mainly of managing its water for municipal uses and to prevent flooding. This came as a result of a flood in 1904. In that year, the rivers water broke through a diversion canal near Yuma, Arizona. This created the New and Alamo Rivers and eventually flooded the Salton Sink, forming the Coachella Valleys Salton Sea. In 1907 however, a dam was built to return the river to its natural course. Since 1907, several more dams have been constructed along the Colorado River and it has grown into a major source of water for irrigation and municipal uses. In 1922, the states in the Colorado River basin signed the Colorado River Compact which governed each states rights to the rivers water and set specific annual allotments of what could be taken. Shortly after the signing of the Colorado River Compact, the Hoover Dam was constructed to provide water for irrigation, manage flooding and generate electricity. Other large dams along the Colorado River include the Glen Canyon Dam as well as the Parker, Davis, Palo Verde and Imperial Dams. In addition to these large dams, some cities have aqueducts running to the Colorado River to further aid in maintaining their water supplies. These cities include Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego California. Leadership int the public Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Leadership int the public - Essay Example According to Rayner (2013) these relationships are quite essential in the performance of the public organization, thus management is to see to it that these relationships are maintained effectively and remain extremely functional. An illustration of how good working relationships are important in public organizations has been reflected in the case study; when Peter Mathews took the position of the Acting Director of Immigration, his relationship with that of his ten; area and program managers was quite strained 1. If anything, his relationship to them was characterized by resentment and impasse (opposition) which is an absolute inhibition to the success of any public organization. It is evident to see exactly how Peter Mathews got frustrated at his unsuccessful efforts to connect to his managers such that he took it upon himself to figure out ways how to improve the organization which, unfortunately, only brewed more hatred; causing him to rethink his choice to take up the job in the first place. Additionally, Public service organizations the Immigration inclusive is subject to attaining high rates of performances. It is important to note with reference to Baird and Green (2008) that the performance of the public service is quite critical in guaranteeing the rule of law and safeguarding national security. This illustrates the fact that public organizations require that the management in place puts in a lot of effort to secure productivity in terms of good performance and effectiveness in accomplishing the set goals and objectives of that given organization 2. Failure to do so only shows that the government in place is not effective in implementing the laws and in protecting its citizens as well. It is for this reason that in the study, we realize that the Director General (DG) requests Peter Mathews to leave his job with an employment services group to take on a sixth month assignment as an

Change Process and Models Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Change Process and Models - Coursework Example Without any iota of difficulty, the change that took place can be explained using three change process theories. These change process theories have carefully been enumerated below; in relation to the change that took place within the organization. The first theory that explains the change that took place is the expectancy theory. In an expectancy theory, it is generally said that people are induced to act in specific ways because they are motivated to act as such (Johnson, 2012). What this means is that expectancy theory demands that people pay off the motivation they receive by giving back excellent delivery. Looking at the fact that two people were promoted as a form of intrinsic motivation (Homik et al, 2008), it can be said that the expectancy theory was applied in this instance. This is because by motivating these two employees with the promotions, they will become obliged and expected to work with certain levels of output expectations. If for nothing at all, they will be expected to work above their means as a way of proving to their superiors that they deserve the promotions that were granted them. Another change process theory that comes to play in this instance is that of equity theory. According to the equity theory, people within an organization will be expecting to judge whether or not there is being fair distribution of available resources (Fuchs et al, 1997). With the present scenario, fairness and equity can be judged from the fact that the employees of the organization who were promoted can be labeled as resources because they form the basis of the human resource of their organization (Gardener, 2008). Secondly, fairness was attained because their hard work for their organization was acknowledged and rewarded. Indeed, there had been situations within the same organization whereby some employees were very aggrieved because they felt that their efforts were not recognized

Coffee and Starbucks Essay Example for Free
Coffee and Starbucks Essay In 1971, Starbucks was founded on a love for coffee and 42 years later you can still go in and expect the same delicious cup of steaming hot coffee from your local store, served to you from a friendly face. Starbucks mission is ââ¬Å"to inspire and nurture the human spirit ââ¬â one person, one cup, and one neighborhood at a time. Today, with more than 18,000 stores in 62 countries, Starbucks is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world. And with every cup, we strive to bring both our heritage and an exceptional experience to life. â⬠(http://www. starbucks. com/about-us/our-heritage). They offer the best roasted coffee, handcrafted beverages; coffee experience products, excellence service and innovation, plus they are dedicated to produce a great coffee experience to customers. (Starbucks, 2011) The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze Starbucksââ¬â¢ organizational structure and the best form of organizational structure that best fits Starbucks with an emphasis on Job description and Job Specification for a Starbucks employee. I will also try to determine the form of departmentalization that should be used, as well as whether centralization or decentralization of power should be used in light of the recent financial struggles theyââ¬â¢ve had. Lastly, I will attempt to determine which organizational configuration best fits Starbucks. Job description is defined as ââ¬Å"a formal lists of tasks and dutiesâ⬠and Job specification is defined as ââ¬Å"a list of eligibility requirements or qualifications needed to perform a jobâ⬠(Reilly, Minnick Baack. 2011). These definitions will be used in creating a position for a new employee. Job Description: If you love coffee and helping people than you just might be perfect for this job! At Starbucks, we strive to provide a much needed service in todayââ¬â¢s busy world. At Starbucks you can learn all about different coffee beans from all over the world and help in developing a great working team. You will be trained in what it means to thoroughly enjoy your job, the people you work with in a clean and safe environment and to enjoy working with the best coffee you can imagine. Job Specification: Develop a working knowledge of all products we offer. Maintain a clean and friendly store. Maintain a professional attitude and your composure should the store become busier than usual. Anticipates customer and store needs. Be Flexible with shifts and days that you can work. Starbucks should be using is departmentalization by geographic region. Starbuck locations are all over the United States. Starbucks uses a matrix configuration by combining divisional and functional structures. Divisional structure is used in multi-product or multi-market operations. Starbucks fall into this structure by having so many different beverages and items on the menu. When putting out so many different items one has to specialize in those items. Starbucks trains their employees to know every item inside and out. You cannot have one person who can make one drink and nit another. They use functional structure to stay organized activities such as coordination, supervision and task allocation. With 18,000 stores it takes many teams to stay updated of everything that is going on in the market. Starbucks hires people who specialize in marketing strategy to keep them on top of the market. The form should be changed in the stores that serve lunch because the structure of the work changes. It becomes more of a machine bureaucracy in that it is highly routine in making drinks as well as sandwiches and salads. When you have to repeat something many times you are working like a machine. Starbucks has decentralized authority because they created decision-making for each manager. There are also lots of stores around the world and each store has different from the authority, managers, and customers. This also allows for employees to be able to give their thoughts, opinions, and ideas. If the company uses their ideas they are rewarded. It also allows for the lines of communication to stay open between employees and managers which allows for a friendly working environment. Starbucks is making sure that it is here to stay. By surrounding itself and its team members with the best training and communication they stand out against all competitors. Yes, other will try to stand up against the designer coffee label but when it comes down to it Starbucks is finding new ways to stay at the top. With being in different regions they have created an evening atmosphere where you can drop in after work, with friends, after yoga, by yourself, after a long day or after a great day. The food is amazing. The wine selection is simple and smart (www. starbucks. com/coffeehouse/starbucks-stores/starbucks-evenings). Starbucks will change the structure of the business as many times as it takes to make it work for them. You never know they may create things that work for them that do not work for other coffee shops. REFERENCES Reilly, M. , Minnick, C. , Baack, D. (2011). The five functions of effective management. August Wilsonâ??s Fences :: essays research papers
August Wilsonââ¬â¢s Fences August Wilson''s 1985 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Fences" thoughtfully examines the escalating racial tensions in America during the 1950s. The playwright deftly handles such complex social issues as racism and adultery without smug commentary. The subtle discussion of black America offers more insight than lecture, which heightens the dramatic impact upon the audience. Wilson recognizes that the family lies the foundation for American society as a whole, and shrewdly chooses family as the emphasis for "Fences." The play''s central focus is the Maxson''s, the instrument Wilson uses to introduce African-American culture to those who are unfamiliar. In the mid-1950s, America was still experiencing a post-World War II economic boon, and could at last allow foreign affairs to take a back seat to domestic issues. The social climate was becoming increasingly heated with the 1954 Supreme Court decision Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka, which ruled school segregation was unconstitutional. This landmark ruling ignited racial tensions across America, which had been slowly simmering for years. The protagonist of "Fences" is former baseball player-turned Pittsburgh garbage man Troy Maxson, and the antagonist is clearly racism. It is racism which has defied Troy Maxson at every turn and his skin color stood in the way of his quest to grab a piece of the American dream for himself and his family. Racism creates the conflict, which causes Troy to feel that he has been "fenced" in by a discriminatory society. It has heated tensions within the Maxson home between Troy and his wife, Rose, and Troy and his son Cory. August Wilson establishes an impression of the 53-year-old Troy Maxson early in Act I, writing that he is "a large man with thick, heavy hands; it is this largeness that he strives to fill out and make an accommodation with.

Control Mehanism Paper
Control Mechanisms Deanna Sapata, Erik Morris, Patricia Johnson, and Bruchella Pitts MGT/330 November 26, 2012 University of Phoenix Control Mechanisms Within any organization it needs a form of control. Without control the organization cannot flourish its possibilities and success. There are times situations will get out of control in different departments of the organization. With the help of control mechanisms like market control, feedback control, concurrent control, and feedforward control with the right person in management the situations will be handled. EffectivenessAppleââ¬â¢s organization basically uses a bureaucratic control and market control mechanism, which is controlled in all the operations in Appleââ¬â¢s organization by the CEO, in which used to be Steve jobs but Tim Cook is his predecessor as CEO. There are four types of specific control mechanisms in Apple, such as a feed-forward, concurrent, market, and feedback controls. The feed-forward control mechanism i n appleââ¬â¢s organization is very effective, this organization is a system of innovation and differentiation in which a feed-forward control mechanism would benefit this organization tremendously. This is because Appleââ¬â¢s system is on meeting the customersââ¬â¢ needs and wants and prediction of their future wants and needs and ability to determine functionality of the operations of their organization is crucial to this success. A feed-forward control mechanism lays out all rules and regulations in all of the organizations operations and employee based decisions and activities, Apple is an organization based on control and effectiveness if this control.Apples use of a concurrent control mechanism is one of their primary focuses because the focus is on environment awareness of the products in the process of the manufacturing, transportation, product use, recycling, and facilities. A concurrent control in the oversight of the use of greenhouse gas emissions in the process o f the production of their products in which they call a Comprehensive Life Cycle Analysis (Apple, 2012). Apple needs to have eyes on the production cycle to monitor the arbon emitted in the production of their products, so a concurrent control mechanism is one of their primary focuses in their company and meeting the needs of their clients worldwide. Another main focus of Appleââ¬â¢s organization is their marketing strategies, a market control mechanism. A market control Mechanism has a focus on the price competition of the other major competitor corporations, in which is another of Appleââ¬â¢s focuses.Apple strives to be the best in all operations and in marketing they are constantly competing with other multi- million corporations. A feedback control mechanism has to do with the feedback the organization gets back on processes and operations in an organization. This is the driving force of Apple, to be the most innovative and to maintain a differentiation aspect they must re ly on the feedback they receive in all departments and operations in their organization. They rely on their financial, marketing, service, production, and environment awareness to be the reason that the client chooses Appleââ¬â¢s products over Appleââ¬â¢s competitors productââ¬â¢s, and Apple becomes the number one organization globally as the go to in products. All four of these mechanisms have a positive effect on the four functions of management. Feedforward control is a mechanism that handles the operations and procedures and makes sure the operation and procedures are done the correct way. By using this mechanism it stops a problem before it can arise.Feedforword is a very important mechanism to have when dealing with an operation like Apple. Technology is the main source of communication and running businesses along with many other things feedforward would work with any company. No one wants to have problems with the departments of their company, to avoid any problems f eedforward would be the right tool to use. Then there is the market control mechanism that uses a tool called pricing mechanism to control the activities within the organization like they are economic transactions. The market mechanism is an awesome tool to have because confused output can be identified and market can be set up between parties. Concurrent control is a mechanism that occurs when plans are being carried out such as directing, monitoring, and fine-tuning. One more control mechanism is the feedback control that happens when the performance data have been collected and examine and is given to make corrections through someone or something. All four of these control mechanisms are very ffective within an organization. I donââ¬â¢t believe that a negative affect will occur because the controlled mechanisms are needed to control the functions of the organization. Just like the four functions of management are needed to establish the success of a company the control mechanis ms are needed too. Apple is worldwide company that has the hart of many consumers, customers, and inverters without the four functions of management and control mechanisms Apple would not hart of its customers.Because Apple is so successful all of these control mechanisms are required along with the four functions of management. Steve Jobs was the CEO of Apple Inc. before he died he was a man that took his job seriously. If Steve Jobs did not care about how his company was ran it would not have the success it does today. Steve made sure that he set performance standards and took action when the performance was not the way he wanted it to be. This is all about controlling what goes on within the organization to be successful.
